Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Catoosa County, Georgia, in the household of his mother Margaret Maroney.3 Marshall enlisted in the Georgia Volunteers on March 18, 1861 in Ringgold, Catoosa County, Georgia to serve for a period of 12 months.4 Marshall L. Gilliland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Uvalde County, Texas, enumerated 15 June 1880, living as a boarder in the Nancy J. Thompson household.5 He commited suicide and his body was found on 18 July 1884 at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, at the Southern Hotel.6 A newspaper article appeared in the San Antonio Light on the same day detailing what happened.6

Her children James R., John Alexander, Adeline and Mary J. were listed as living with her.3 Margaret Jane Higgins died on 25 December 1901 at Texas at age 72.1
