     James Gilliland was born circa 1775 at Virginia.1

On October 21, 1814, 10 acres of land were surveyed and granted to James on the waters of Roans Creek in the 6th District of Carter County, Tennessee.2 He married Nancy Buckner on 24 August 1815.3,1

James Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Carter County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male under 5, two males 5-9, one male 10-14, one male 50-59, three females under 5, one female 10-14, and one female 30-39.4

James Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Johnson County, Tennessee, with a household listed as two males 15-19, one male 20-29, one male 60-69, one female 5-9, three females 10-14, and one female 50-59.5

On June 6, 1842, James purchased two tracts of land in Civil District 5, Johnson County, Tennessee, on Roan Creek, one containing 104 acres and the other containing 80 acres, from James K. Edmondson for $5.00.6

On February 15, 1848, James sold those two tracts of land he got from James Edmondson to John O'Neal on the courthouse steps.7

James Gilliland and Nancy Buckner appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Johnson County, Tennessee, enumerated 28 September 1850. Their children Hamilton H., James, Elizabeth and Rachel were listed as living with them.1

James Gilliland died on 14 June 1853 at Johnson County, Tennessee.8,9 He left no will and his son Hamilton was granted Letters of Administration on October 3, 1853.9

Gilliland and Louisa Owen.1 Margaret "Jane" Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Johnson County, Tennessee, in the household of her parents, Hamilton H. Gilliland and Louisa Owen.1 Margaret "Jane" Gilliland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Johnson County, Tennessee, in the household of her parents, Hamilton H. Gilliland and Louisa Owen.2 Margaret "Jane" Gilliland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Doe River Cove, Carter County, Tennessee in the household of her parents, Louisa Owen and Hamilton H. Gilliland.3 Margaret "Jane" Gilliland married Obediah Leonard on 22 June 1886 at Carter County, Tennessee.4,5 He died prior to the 1900 census.
