James may have been the son of William Gilliland.
James Gilliland was born circa 1801 at Tennessee.1 He married Jane Giles.1 James Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Cocke County, Tennessee, with a household listed as three males under 5, one male 20-29, two females 5-9, and one female 20-29.2 He was listed two places down from a William Gilliland, age 50-59, who could have been his father, and next to William Giles, age 50-59, who was probably his father-in-law. On the next page of the census are Robert Gilliland and William Gilliland. Could James and William be related to Robert and William? Were the elder William and Robert brothers?2

James Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Polk County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 5-9, two males 10-14, one male 30-39, one female 5-9, two females 15-19, and one female 30-39.3 He and Jane Giles appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Polk County, Tennessee, enumerated 9 October 1850. Their children Margaret, Quinton, Isaac, Elizabeth L. and Martha Angeline were listed as living with them, as was 16 year old Martha Killing (possibly Keeling?)1
According to the 1840 census, James and Jane had 7 children. Only 5 have been accurately accounted for. Some researchers believe that their two other sons were William Gilliland and Robert Gilliland. Both of these men are found in Polk County, Tennessee in the 1860 census but to date I have not been able to find them in the 1850 census records.
