John Gilliland

M, #5238, b. circa 1777, d. 4 April 1846
Last Edited=24 Nov 2014
John Gilliland was born circa 1777 at Ireland.1,2,3 He was the son of William Gilliland and Levina ?1 John Gilliland married Mary "Polly" Joyce.1 John Gilliland and Elizabeth Averil obtained a marriage license on 14 December 1818 at Switzerland County, Indiana.4 John Gilliland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Pleasant township, Switzerland County, Indiana, with a household listed as two males under 10, one male 10-16, one male 26-44, four females under 10, one female 10-15, and one female 16-25.3

On January 11, 1820, the General Assembly of Indiana passed an act providing "that George Hunt, of the county of Wayne, John Conner, of the county of Fayette, Stephen Ludlow, of the county of Dearborn, John Gilliland, of the county of Switzerland, Joseph Bartholomew, of the county of Clark, John Tipton, of the county of Harrison, Jesse B. Durham, of the county of Jackson, Frederick Rapp, of the county of Posey, William Prince, of the county of Gibson, and Thomas Emmerson, of the county of Knox, be, and they are hereby, appointed commissioners to select and locate a site for the permanent seat of government of the State of Indiana."5 At the August election in 1823, John, along with Israel R. Whitehead and William C. Keen, ran for the office of clerk. Whitehead was elected.6

John went to Montgomery County, Indiana in 1828 and was elected Elder in the Crawfordsville Church in November of that year. He took a prominent part in founding Wabash College and was the first treasurer, as well as one of the first trustees, of the college.7 On December 4, 1829, 167 acres of land that John had in Switzerland County was assigned to Thomas Gilliland, presumably his brother.8 John Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Montgomery County, Indiana, with a household listed as two males 10-14, one male 50-59, two females under 5, one female 5-9, one female 10-14, one female 15-19, and one female 30-39.9

By 1839, John and his family had moved to Louisa County, Iowa. On January 18, 1839, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the county.10 He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Louisa County, Iowa, with a household listed as one male 5-9, one male 60-69, one female 10-14, one female 15-19, and one female 20-29.2 From 1845-1846 he was County Clerk.10

John Gilliland died on 4 April 1846 at Wapello, Louisa County, Iowa.1

In 1888, Charles H. McGrew, a grandson of John's, wrote a book about his mother entitled "Reminiscences of Our Mother (Jane Gilliland McGrew)". In it he said the following:

"John was a teacher and civil engineer. He taught mostly private schools, for in his day public schools were unknown in the west. He took a very prominent part in founding Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Ind., and was the first treasurer of the college, and one of the first trustees."

Dr. Joseph F. Tuttle, a former president of Wasbash College, provided the following information on John that was included in the book Charles McGrew wrote:

"John Gilliland came from Ohio to Madison, Indiana, and thence to Rising Sun. He is said at one time to have been well off. He was a surveyor and school-teacher. In 1820 he was one of the commission—third on the list—appointed by the Legislature to locate the capital, Indianapolis. He came to Crawfordsville in 1828, was greatly trusted by Mayor Whitlock, universally respected, and was elected Elder in the Crawfordsville Church, November, 1828. 'He was a very devout and lovable Christian, generally esteemed by all classes, and very humble in prayer.' He lived in a cabin at the north end of Washington Street, was twice married, had eight children, and went to Iowa to reside. He was the man who said, by the smouldering ruins of the college in 1838, 'We did not know how much we loved the college until this calamity came.11'"
In a letter written by John's son, William Elliott Gilliland, to his niece, Lovina Cotton, William records the Gilliland genealogy stating that John had the following siblings: David, Betsy Lysle, Hannah, Jane, James, William, Thomas, Samuel, and Polly.1

Adaline Gilliland was born on 31 January 1829.2 She was the daughter of John Gilliland and Elizabeth Averil.1 The following was taken from the book Reminiscences of Our Mother (Jane Gilliland McGrew) by Charles H. McGrew: "Aunt Adaline is the only one of my mother's family I ever saw. I remember seeing her when I was a little boy about four years old. She has been true to her father's profession, having been a teacher all her life. She was still alive in 1883, and teaching in Nevada. I have some faint memories of her when a child. She taught school in the old Chastine School House, and was at our home most of the time. I remember going to school with her one day, and of taking dinner at Mrs. Chastine's. While brother Jim and I were in college in 1880, we wrote her a nice letter and she sent each of us a twenty-dollar gold piece. She must now be almost sixty years old."3

Adaline Gilliland died on 24 August 1904 at Louisa County, Iowa, at age 75.2 She was buried at Fulton/Cairo Cemetery, Marshall township, Louisa County, Iowa.2

John Gilliland1

John Gilliland was the son of John Gilliland and Elizabeth Averil.1 The following was taken from the book Reminiscences of Our Mother (Jane Gilliland McGrew) by Charles H. McGrew: "Uncle John Gilliland lived with father and mother [William and Jane Gilliland McGrew] for a while when a boy. It was, perhaps before I was born. I remember of seeing his picture. As I remember him from it, he was a young man about eighteen, with a rather delicate constitution. He left our home and came to California during the gold excitement. My father told me he and my mother received letters from him for some time after his arrival. In time they lost all trace of hint. For years we have supposed him to be dead. We think he must have gone clown in that wild, weird, romantic and desperate struggle for gold. He was only a boy, some twelve or fifteen, when he left. It seems to me I can remember of mother getting letters from him in early war times. He was our mother's only brother, and she loved him tenderly. She used to dwell lovingly over his picture, and say, 'If John is living I know he will write or come back sometime.' But he never came, and the fate of his young life is and probably always will be, a mystery to us. He may have fallen under the hand of the murderer, and be sleeping all unknown in some gulch, and may still be among the zealous seekers of gold."2
