He was the son of Noah Lafayette Gilland and Mary A. Lowe.1 Charles Reese Gilland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Union Star, Breckinridge County, Kentucky in the household of his parents, Noah Lafayette Gilland and Mary A. Lowe.1 Charles Reese Gilland appeared on the 1910 Federal Census Breckinridge County, Kentucky in the household of his parents, Noah Lafayette Gilland and Mary A. Lowe.5

Charles Reese Gilland married Estella May (Stella) Griffee, daughter of Robert Griffee.6 On June 5, 1918, Charles registered for the draft for WWI. At the time, he and Estella were living in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, and he was working for the Louisville Railway Company.3 Charles Reese Gilland and Estella May (Stella) Griffee appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, enumerated 5 January 1920. Their children Ella, Lula M., Cora and Charles A. were listed as living with them.8 In the 1935 Louisville City Directory, Charles and Stella were listed as living at 1135 Dixie Highway and apparently owed a dry goods store located at 1123 Dixie Highway. His brother, Edgar O., was boarding with him, as was daughter Ella and nephew Melvin. His father, Noah, was living at the business residence and was listed as a clerk for Charles.9 Charles Reese Gilland and Estella May (Stella) Griffee appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, enumerated 2 April 1940. Their children Cora, Charles A., Lawrence E. and Henry Alvin were listed as living with them.10 Charles Reese Gilland died on 22 October 1949 at Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, at age 52.4

Gilliland died on 3 April 1974 at Meade County, Kentucky.4 He was one of the victims of a massive cell of over 140 tornadoes that occurred on April 3rd and 4th, 1974 and spanned several states including Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana and Ohio. He is survived by 17 first cousins. Funeral services were held April 7, 1974 at 2:00 p.m. from Meade County High School Gymnasium with the Meade County Ministerial Association officiating. Interment was at 3: 00 p.m. Monday in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Charles Blanc officiating, and was directed by Hager-Wright Funeral Home.5
