Davis Gilliland was born circa 1801 at Kentucky.1 He was the son of Adam Gilliland and Sarah Davis.2 Davis Gilliland married Hulda Bartlett on 8 March 1824 at Henry County, Kentucky.3,1 Davis Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Perry County, Indiana, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 5-9, one male 30-39, one female under 5, and one female 20-29.4 On August 15, 1838, Davis, from Meade County, Kentucky, purchased 40 acres of public land in Orange County, Indiana described as the SW¼ of the SW¼ of Section 29, Township 3N, Range 1E.5 On April 10, 1843, Davis purchased 40 acres of public land in Crawford County, Indiana described as the SE¼ of the SE¼ of Section 30, Township 3S, Range 1E.6 He and Hulda Bartlett appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Ohio township, Crawford County, Indiana, enumerated 7 November 1850. Their children Mary E., Adam D., Letitia, Fielding L., George Washington, Lyman C. and Angeline were listed as living with them.1 Davis Gilliland and Hulda Bartlett appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Ohio township, Crawford County, Indiana, enumerated 10 August 1860. Their children Fielding L., George Washington and Angeline were listed as living with them.7

On August 4, 1868, in Arkansas County, Arkansas, a Davis Gilliland, age 67, married a Mrs. Nancy Walker, of the same county, age 35. I don't know for certain whether this is the same Davis Gilliland, although his age fits. I have been in touch with the Arkansas County Circuit Clerk who has done some checking into their county records. She was not able to find any land transactions for him so apparently he never purchased any land. She also checked the Cemetery Records for Arkansas County but could not find him listed there either. Of course that doesn't mean he isn't buried in an older cemetery that hasn't been indexed. I also have not been able to find a Nancy Gilliland in the 1870 census records that fits her age.8
