Adam Gilliland1

M, #4511, b. between 1766 and 1784, d. circa December 1817
Last Edited=9 Dec 2017
Adam Gilliland was born between 1766 and 1784.1 He married Sarah Davis, daughter of ? Davis, before 19 February 1799, probably in Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia.)2,3

Adam first appeared in the tax books for Shelby County, Kentucky in 1800 as a free white male over 21. In 1801 he was being taxed for land on Hickory Run. By 1806 he was located on Little Bullskin and then in 1807 he was back on Hickory Run where he would stay until 1811 when he's on Plumb Creek. From 1812 to 1815 he's again back on Bullskin where he will stay until his death.4,5

Adam Gilliland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Shelby County, Kentucky, with a household listed as one male under 10, one male 10-15, one male 26-44, two females under 10, one female 16-25, and one female 45 and over.1 In 1811 (day and month not recorded in record) Adam entered into what appears to be a mortgage with a John Tilford in that for $100 paid by Tilford, Adam would sell him the 100 acres of land where Adam lived unless the $100 was paid back to Tilford by December 25, 1812. Thomas Gilliland (possibly this Thomas Gilliland) was one of the witnesses to this indenture. According to a side note, the debt was never fully repaid before Adam died.6

On April 20, 1816, Adam and Sarah sold to Isaac Watters (or Walters) 20 acres of land near the head waters of Hickory Run in Shelby County, Kentucky for $220.7

Adam Gilliland died circa December 1817 at Shelby County, Kentucky, without leaving a will.2 His wife Sarah was made administratrix of his estate. On December 15, 1817, she, along with Samuel Cull, Elias Wood, and John Gilliland, were bound for $3000, the obligation being that Sarah would make a "true and perfect inventory" of Adam's estate, which was done, on January 17, 1818.2,8

On February 24, 1835, the heirs of Adam - John A. Gilliland and Emeline his wife, Thomas Gilliland and Elizabeth his wife, Elizabeth Webb and her husband Fielding Webb, Letitia Gibson and her husband Hamilton Gibson, and Davis Gilliland and Huldy his wife, sold 80 acres of land in Shelby County to Edward Bull for $1133. It was part of a tract of 100 acres that Adam had purchased from Charles Lynch on July 14, 1805.9
Adam was most likely the brother of Daniel Gilliland and Robert Gilliland. Adam and Daniel married sisters - Sarah and Elizabeth Davis. Adam, Daniel and Robert appeared near each other on the tax records for Shelby County.

Daniel Gilliland1

Last Edited=10 Dec 2017
Daniel Gilliland was born between 1766 and 1784.1 He married Elizabeth Davis, daughter of ? Davis, on 26 September 1797 at Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia). On February 14, 1805, Daniel purchased 100 acres of land on the waters of Long Run in Shelby County, Kentucky from Charles Lynch for $300.2 Daniel Gilliland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Shelby County, Kentucky, with a household listed as two males 10-14, one male 26-44, two females under 10, and one female 26-44.1 He died circa 1812 at Shelby County, Kentucky.1,3,4

An inventory of Daniel's estate was filed in Shelby County Court in January 1812.4 On March 27, 1827, pursuant to an order by the Shelby County Court, the land of Daniel Gilliland was surveyed and apportioned off to his widow and four children, who were his heirs.5 In the April term of 1829, Elizabeth filed her report in the Shelby County Court concerning her guardianship of her son Daniel.6 A second guardianship report was filed in the August term.7

Note: There is a possibility that Daniel and Elizabeth had one other son, John. In the 1810 census record Daniel and Elizabeth had two sons ages 10-14. This would be James and someone else, not Daniel Jr., who was an infant at the time of his father's death and was under his mother's guardianship until at least 1829. There was a John Gilliland who died in Shelby County circa 1823. Elizabeth Gilliland was the administratrix of his estate. This could either be his wife or, more likely, his mother. This would also explain why there were only four heirs listed in the division of Daniel's land in 1827.8
There's a good possibility that Daniel was the brother of Adam Gilliland and maybe even Robert Gilliland. Daniel and Adam married sisters - Sarah and Elizabeth Davis.

Elizabeth Davis was born between 1771 and 1789.1 She was the daughter of ? Davis. Elizabeth Davis married Daniel Gilliland on 26 September 1797 at Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Elizabeth Davis was probably the female age 26 to 44 listed in the household of her husband, Daniel Gilliland, in the 1810 Federal Census of Shelby County, Kentucky.2 Her husband Daniel died circa 1812.

Elizabeth Davis appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Shelby County, Kentucky, with a household listed as one male under 10, two males 16-25, one female 10-15, one female 16-25, and one female over 45.3 In the April term of 1829, Elizabeth filed her report in the Shelby County Court concerning her guardianship of her son Daniel.4 A second guardianship report was filed in the August term.5 She appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Shelby County, Kentucky, with a household listed as one male 15-19 and one female 50-59.1

On October 21, 1843, Elizabeth made out her last will & testament as follows:

Know all men by these present that I Elizabeth Gilliland of county Shelby & state of Kentucky do ordain & constitute this my last will & testament in manner and form following. To wit; I give & bequeath to my granddaughter Sarah Katherine Gilliland all my personal property viz one yellow horse, my present crop of corn & all my cattle and hogs & also all my household & kitchen furniture & also my beds & bedding or bed clothes. I give to Daniel Gilliland, my son the sum of six shillings and to Elizabeth Ferguson, the sum of six shillings and to Sarah Trimmell the like sum of six shillings & to my son James the sum of six shillings. I do hearby constitute Daniel Gilliland executor of this my last will & testament more over I do not require him to give bond & security to the county court believing he will do what is right for his daughter. In testimony whereof thereunto set my hand and seat this 21 Oct 1843.6
