Thomas Gilliland1

M, #425, b. circa 1745, d. December 1814
Last Edited=9 Dec 2019
There's a good posibility that Thomas was the son of Thomas Gilliland and the brother of Hugh Gilliland.
Thomas Gilliland was born circa 1745.1,2

Thomas Gilliland married Mary Polk circa 1775.2

On March 8, 1780 a certificate was granted by the Virginia Commissioners for a little over 348 acres of land situated on the waters of Buffalo Creek, called Mulberry Hill, in Washington County, Pennsylvania, which was surveyed on April 28, 1786.3 In 1781, Thomas appeared on the Tax List for Donegal township, Washington County, Pennsylvania showing he owned 500 acres, 2 horses, 2 cattle, and 5 sheep.4,5

On February 9, 1782 (the year is hard to read), in consideration of the sum of £190, Treasury Warrant No. 10909 was issued to the principal Surveyor of any county within the Commonwealth of Virginia to lay out land for Thomas Gilliland. On June 11, 1790, 100 acres of land in Nelson County, Kentucky on the waters of Rocky Run, a branch of the Salt River, was surveyed for Thomas Gilliland. Then on March 28, 1791, Thomas assigned those 100 acres to John Jordon and the transaction was recorded on February 18, 1793. While I'm not positive this was the same Thomas Gilliland I'm pretty sure it was]

On April 17, 1789, Thomas purchased 900 acres of land in Nelson County, Virginia (which would become part of Hardin County, Kentucky) from Philip Phillips and George May. The land was patented to George May on April 20, 1784. (The transaction was recorded in two different deeds. One in Book 2, pages 85-86 and the other in Book 2, pages 150-151. In Thomas' will, dated April 5, 1813, he willed these 900 acres to four of his sons. Four hundred acres divided between Hugh and Aaron and five hundred acres divided between Thomas and William.)6

Thomas Gilliland married Priscilla Huff circa 1790.2

On September 2, 1795, Thomas and his wife Priscilla, who were living in Kentucky at the time, sold the 348+ acres of land in Washington County, Pennsylvania on Buffalo Creek called Mulberry Hill which he had obtained via a patent dated February 26, 1788, to James Brownlee for £417 15s.7

In 1800, Thomas was listed as living in Hardin County, Kentucky.8

On February 8, 1803, Thomas (recorded in the deed as Thomas Gilliling) purchased 250 acres of land in Hardin County from John and Abigail Glenn, part of a 2000 acre survey patented in the name of William Montgomery, for 121£.9

Thomas Gilliland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Hardin County, Kentucky, with a household listed as two males under 10, one male 10-15, two males 16-25, one male 45 & over, two females 10-15, and one female 45 & over.1

On April 5, 1813, Thomas made out his will. In it he mentioned his wife Priscilla, his daughters Ascenith, Sarah, Hannah, Mary, Priscilla, Rebecca, Rachel, and his sons James, Hugh, Aaron, Thomas, William and John. (The 250 acres of land he purchased in 1803 were willed to John. John and his wife Cynthia exchanged that land with Thompson Rude in 1823 and 1826. John and Cynthia were living in Washington County, Indiana at the time.)10

Thomas Gilliland died in December 1814 at Hardin County, Kentucky.10 His will was probated on December 12, 1814 in Hardin County, Kentucky.10

James Monroe Gilliland was born circa 1828 at Kentucky.1 He was the son of Thomas Gilliland and Martha "Patsy" Armstrong.1 James Monroe Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District No. 1, Hopkins County, Kentucky, in the household of his parents, Thomas Gilliland and Martha "Patsy" Armstrong.1 James Monroe Gilliland married Elvira C. Woodruff in January 1852 at Hopkins County, Kentucky.3,4 James Monroe Gilliland and Elvira C. Woodruff appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkins County, Kentucky, enumerated 18 July 1860. His children John R., Thomas Hampton and Sarah Ollie were listed as living with him.5

James Monroe Gilliland married Mary Elizabeth McGee on 18 October 1870 at Christian County, Kentucky.6,7 On March 18, 1871, James filed a petition of divorce against Mary Elizabeth stating that she was guilty of lewd, lascivious, and unladylike behavior and that she had left him around the 1st of February and committed adultery.8

James Monroe Gilliland supposedly married Bettie Cox circa 1872 at Kentucky and then moved with her to Howell County, Missouri.8 Bettie died around 1877.8

James Monroe Gilliland married Mary Love Sharp on 3 May 1877 at Howard County, Missouri.9 According to a deposition given by his daughter Mary Jane on April 24, 1929, after they were married James and Mary Love Sharp took some of the children down to Arkansas where they stayed for about six months before he left her and returned to Missouri with his children. Mary Jane was then left with the Martin family and then James returned to Arkansas where he supposedly died.8

Most of this information comes from a 249 page Civil War Pension File. In 1929, the Commissioner of Pensions decided to review the pension application for his second wife, Mary Elizabeth McGee Denton Gilliland Elliott, who had been formerly pensioned as the widow of John W. Denton, her first husband, who served in the 17th Kentucky Calvary during the Civil War, her pension being terminated due to her marriage to James. After their supposed divorce, she married George W. Elliott who died in 1922. The pension bureau tried to determine if her marriage to James had indeed been terminated by trying to locate the divorce decree. When they couldn't find that they tried to track him down. Attached are four files that contain most of the important pages regarding James. The complete pension file can be found on Fold3 under the name of John W. Denton.8

Daniel Gilleland was born on 9 June 1795 at Virginia.1,2,3 He was the son of William Gilleland and Nancy Johnson.1,3 On January 5, 1807, Daniel and his brothers Robert and James, purchased 878 acres of land through their guardians, Robert Sample and John Graves, on the headwaters of Half Pine Creek in Robertson County, Tennessee from John Caffrey and Howell Tatum for $878. The land was originally part of a tract of land containing 1607 acres granted to William Terrell (an assignee of Benjamin Coffield) by grant number 2739 dated July 20, 1796.4

Daniel Gilleland married Precilla Boatwright on 3 February 1819 at Miller County, Arkansas Territory.3,1 On June 2, 1821, Daniel sold his 1/2 of the 878 acres of land in Robertson County, Tennessee to Robert Pennington for $400. Daniel was living in Hempstead County, Arkansas at the time. His brother Robert was not listed on the deed so I can only assume that he was deceased by then.5

Daniel Gilleland and Precilla Boatwright appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Milam County, Texas, enumerated 10 October 1850. Their children William, John Henry, Daniel Moses, James, Alexander and Felix Grundy were listed as living with them.2 Daniel Gilleland and Precilla Boatwright appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Milam County, Texas, enumerated 30 July 1860, living next door to his son John Henry.
