John DeSaussure Gilland appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Florence, Florence County, South Carolina in the household of his parents, John DeSaussure Gilland and Jane Allen.3 John DeSaussure Gilland appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Bronx, Bronx County, New York, at Morrisania City Hospital, enumerated 6 April 1940.4 He was an interne. He married Mary Elizabeth Dove.5 John DeSaussure Gilland died on 4 March 2002 at Conway, Horry County, South Carolina, at age 88.2

CONWAY - Dr. John D. "Dessie" Gilland, Jr., age 88, of Elm St., died Monday, March 4, 2002, at a Conway hospital.

Dr. Gilland was born January 17, 1914, in Florence, a son of the late John deSaussure Gilland, Sr., and Jane Allen Gilland. Dr. Gilland was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical College of South Carolina. He practiced medicine at Morrisania City and Lenox Hill hospitals in New York City as well as in Charlotte, N.C., and was Chief of Surgery in Kingstree before moving to Conway in 1948, where for many years he was one of only two surgeons in Horry County. He served as Chief of Staff of Conway Hospital; thrice President of the Horry County Medical Society; first President of the South Carolina Medical Care Foundation; S.C. Medical Association President; member and delegate of the American Medical Association; and board member of the S.C. Medical Association Political Action Committee. He was a member of the Fellow American College of Surgeons; Southeastern Surgical Congress; Southern Medical Association; Tri-State Medical Society; and Vice-President of the Atlantic Coastline Railroad Surgeons and member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina.

Dr. Gilland was a member of the Kingston Presbyterian Church and served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee and was named Trustee Emeritus. Dr. Gilland was active in his community in a variety of ways, Conway Community Concert organizer and first President; First Chairman of the Board for Coastal Carolina University's Wheelwright Council for the Arts; Conway High School Foundation Board; Conway Hospital Foundation Board; Lions Club member; Brookgreen Gardens Life Member. He was also named Honorary Alumnus of both Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College. He was predeceased by a son, John D. Gilland, III, and a sister, Louise Kitchens.

Surviving are, his wife of 54 years, Mary Elizabeth Dove Gilland of Kingstree; two daughters, Elizabeth Dove Gilland of Conway and Jane Gilland Skinner of Georgetown and her husband Dr. Wright Skinner; one sister, Ruth Barnett of New York; four granddaughters, Ginny, Marguerita, Rachel and Caroline Skinner all of Georgetown.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, at Kingston Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Don Steins officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, directed by GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, CONWAY CHAPEL.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to Kingston Presbyterian Church, 800 3rd Ave., Conway, S.C. 29526, or the Horry County Shelter Homes, 1872 Highway 90, Conway, S.C. 29526, or to the Tara Hall for Boys, P.O. Box 955, Georgetown, S.C. 29442.2

CONWAY - On January 28, Mary Elizabeth Dove Gilland of Conway passed away. Born in Kingstree, SC on February 3, 1915 to Leon Caldwell Dove and Marion Stringfellow Dove, she attended Winthrop College. During WWII, she worked for Congressman John L. McMillan of Florence. She married John deSaussure Gilland, Jr. of Florence and they moved to Conway where he was a surgeon at Conway Hospital and they raised three children. Mrs. Gilland was a member of the Huegenot Society, Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She golfed and played a mean hand of bridge. She loved her husband, her children and their friends and her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and their son, John D. Gilland III, as well as her siblings John Calhoun Dove of James Island, Rachel Richey of Charlotte and Marion Graham of Indian Town. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Gilland of Conway and Jane Gilland Skinner of Georgetown, and her four granddaughters: Ginny (Hal) Haynes, Marguerite (Ryan) Oliver, Rachel Skinner and Caroline Skinner. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm on Saturday, January 30 at Goldfinch Funeral Home in Conway. Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Sunday, January 31 at Kingston Presbyterian Church in Conway with Rev. Don Steins officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.      Sarah Isaphine ? was born on 24 February 1853.1 She married Joseph Frazier Gilliland, son of Samuel Gilliland and Lois Dunlap.1 Sarah Isaphine ? and Joseph Frazier Gilliland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Big Beaver township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 7 June 1880. Their children Jessie F. and George W. were listed as living with them.2 Sarah Isaphine ? died on 29 April 1913 at Beaver County, Pennsylvania, at age 60.1 She was buried at Seceder Cemetery, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.1
