He was discharged on January 1, 1814.4 On January 22, 1814, Robert and his brother-in-law Gray Haggard sold a tract of land of 100 acres to his step-father Daniel Mason for $500. The land, lying on Town Creek, was part of a survey of 640 acres which was first granted to Stockley Donelson who conveyed it to Mordecai Mendenhall who then conveyed 300 of those acres to Robert Gilliland, Robert S. Gilliland's father.5 Then on July 21, 1814, Robert and Gray sold part of a tract of land of 640 acres in Roane County called Square Bottom to Daniel Mason for $500. Center (possibly a brother), to Henry Liggett for $300.16 Caroline died sometime before June 1840.

Robert married Elizabeth Absten on 13 June 1840 at Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee.4,9 Robert Samuel Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Roane County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 40-49, two females under 5, one female 5-9, two females 10-14, and one female 20-29.17 Sometime between the 1840 and the 1850 census, Robert, Elizabeth and family moved to Alabama. He and Elizabeth Absten appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Marshall County, Alabama, enumerated 2 December 1850. Their children Adeline, Susan Ann, Samuel, Catherine M. and Margaret were listed as living with them.18 On November 10, 1851 Robert was granted a little under 40 acres of land (NW¼ of the SW¼ of Section 4 in Township 11 of Range 1W),in Blount County, Alabama for his service in the War of 1812.19 Robert Samuel Gilliland and Elizabeth Absten appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Blount County, Alabama, enumerated 6 June 1860. Their children Susan Ann, Samuel, Catherine M., Margaret, Martha, Cena and James were listed as living with them.20 On September 25, 1862, Robert sold (transferred) the land that he had received in 1851 (NW¼ of the SW¼ of Section 4 in Township 11 of Range 1W) to Elizabeth for her and her children and for their support, maintenance and education and for the support and maintenance for Robert in his old age.21

John Gilliland

M, #413, b. between 1781 and 1790, d. after 16 December 1839
Last Edited=11 Dec 2018
John Gilliland was born between 1781 and 1790 at North Carolina.1,2 He was the son of Joseph Gilliland and Lettice/Letty ?3 John Gilliland was probably one of the two males under age 16 listed in the household of his father, Joseph Gilliland, in the 1790 Federal Census of Chatham County, North Carolina.4

John Gilliland married Anna Elizabeth Turner circa 1800 at Rowan County, North Carolina.5 (This marriage date and place was supplied by a descendant. However, I was unable to find this marriage listed in the book "Marriages of Rowan Co., NC, 1753-1868" by Brent Holcomb. The marriages in Mr. Holcomb's book were derived from microfilm copies of the original bonds and from a microfilm copy of a register of marriage bonds maintained from 1851 by the clerk of the county court.) From North Carolina, John and Anna went to Kentucky before finally arriving in Highland County, Ohio.6

John first appeared on the tax lists for Highland County, Ohio in 1819, living on 50 acres of land on Turtle Creek, which was originally owned by Samuel K. Bradford. Although he was in Higland County in 1819, I could not find him in the 1820 census records for that county. John continued to appear on the county tax lists through 1825. (He was most likely listed on the 1826 tax list as well but that list is incomplete. Of the 11 townships in Highland County for that year only townships 7-11 were recorded. Union township, No. 6, was not.)7 Apparently John never purchased the land he was living on as a search through the deed indexes showed none for him.

On August 25, 1824, John, who was living in Highland County, sold 39 acres of land on Little Brush Creek in Chatham County, North Carolina, his share of land from his father's estate, to his brother James for $40.3 Then on September 11th he sold his remaining interest in his father's estate to James for $50.00.8

John appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Union township, Highland County, Ohio, with a household listed as one male 5-9, one male 10-14, one male 40-49, one female 10-14, two females 15-19, and one female 40-49. Also on the 1830 census in Union township were Joseph and Richard Gilliland. John and Joseph were listed on the same page. Richard was on another page.2

On August 20, 1838, John, from Henry County, Indiana, made full payment for the public land that he had purchased located in the NW¼ of the SW¼ of Section 4 in Township 21N of Range 9E, Delaware County, Indiana.9

On December 16, 1839, John made out his will providing for his wife and children Margaret, James, and John. (There was no mention of a son Richard or Joseph. Their names were gotten from a Gilliland genealogy compiled by Betty Wilson of Indianapolis, Indiana sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s.)10

John Gilliland died after 16 December 1839 at Delaware County, Indiana.10 On March 16, 1844 his sons John and James, along with James' wife Clarissa, sold the land described above to David Bartlett for $300.11

Joseph Gilliland was born circa 1802 at North Carolina.1,2 He was the son of John Gilliland and Anna Elizabeth Turner.1 Joseph Gilliland married Lucinda Clark on 6 May 1827 at Highland County, Ohio.3,4,2,5 Joseph Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Union township, Highland County, Ohio, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 20-29, and one female 20-29.6 Joseph and family went to Indiana from Ohio between 1836 and 1837. They were first in Henry County, Indiana where on 20 August 1838 Joseph was granted 40 acres of land in the SE¼ of the NE¼ of Section 5, Township 21N, Range 9E in Delaware County.7 On December 7, 1837, Joseph and Lucinda sold this land.8 (Note the discrepancies in the above land transactions. Certificate #16120, for the purchase of this public land, is dated August 20, 1838. Yet the sale of this land, recorded at the Delaware County Recorder's office, is dated December 7, 1837.) He and Lucinda Clark appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Harrison township, Delaware County, Indiana, enumerated 18 September 1850. Their children David, Daniel, Lucinda, Josiah, Vincent, Elindor, James and Nancy were listed as living with them.2 Joseph Gilliland and Lucinda Clark appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Jerome, Howard County, Indiana, enumerated 18 July 1860. Their children Josiah, Elindor and Vincent were listed as living with them.9 (He was listed as James Gilland and his and Lucinda's ages are incorrect. It looks like 38 and 32 but should really be 58 and 52.) Joseph Gilliland and Lucinda Clark appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Union township, Howard County, Indiana, enumerated 1 June 1870. Their son Vincent was listed as living with them.10

Note: According to a Civil War draft list, three of Joseph's sons were shoemakers - David, Daniel, and Josiah. This is confirmed by various documents, such as census records, for each of these three men.
