     William Gilleland was born circa 1786 at North Carolina.2,3 He was the son of Thomas Gilleland and Mary Allen.1 William Gilleland was probably one of the three males under age 16 listed in the household of his father, Thomas Gilleland, in the 1790 Federal Census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.4 William Gilleland and Elizabeth Fisher obtained a marriage license on 11 October 1805 at Lincoln County, North Carolina.5 William Gilleland appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Lincoln County, North Carolina, with a household listed as two males under 10, one male 16-25, and one female 16-25.3 On September 27, 1815, William purchased 76 acres of land in Lincoln County on the waters of the Catawba River from John Williams for $114.6 Then on March 18, 1819, he sold those 76 acres to James White for $200.7 He appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Lincoln County, North Carolina, with a household listed as four males under 10, three males 10-15, one male 26-44, and one female 26-44 with four persons engaged in agriculture.8 On May 1, 1822, William purchased 104 acres of land on the waters of Litten's Creek from his father for $100.9 He appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Lincoln County, North Carolina, with a household listed as two males 5-9, two males 10-14, one male 15-19, one male 40-49, and one female 40-49.10 On March 15, 1833, William sold to the widow Ann Jones, 20 acres of land on Litten's Creek, part of the tract that he had purchased from his father in 1822, for $50.11 He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Jackson County, Georgia, with a household listed as one male 15-19, one male 20-29, one male 50-59, and one female 50-59 with one person employed in agriculture and one person employed in manufacturer and trade.12 He and Elizabeth Fisher appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Jackson County, Georgia, enumerated 15 August 1850.2 William Gilleland and Elizabeth Fisher appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hall County, Georgia, enumerated 23 June 1860.13

     Thomas Jefferson Gilleland was born on 26 February 1804 at North Carolina.2 He was the son of Thomas Gilleland and Mary Allen.1 Thomas Jefferson Gilleland and Mahala Parrish obtained a marriage license on 11 August 1824 at Lincoln County, North Carolina.3 On August 1, 1825, Thomas sold a little over 4 acres of land, part of the tract of land his father had purchased from John Crawford, to Elijah Litten for $30.4 Thomas Jefferson Gilleland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Lincoln County, North Carolina, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 5-9, one male 20-29, one male 30-39, two females under 5, two females 5-9, one female 10-14, one female 15-19, one female 40-49, and one female 80-89 with two persons engaged in agriculture.5 He and Mahala Parrish appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Catawba County, North Carolina, enumerated 22 August 1850.      David Gilleland was born circa 1793 at North Carolina.2 He was the son of Thomas Gilleland and Mary Allen.1 David Gilleland married Asenath Douglass.2 On September 20, 1818, David, who was living in Lincoln County at the time, purchased 128 acres of land in Iredell County, North Carolina on the Old House Creek on the east side of the Catawba River from William Douglass for $200. The deed was registered in 1823.3 David Gilleland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Iredell County, North Carolina, with a household listed as one male under 10, one male 16-25, one male 45 & over, one female 16-25, and one female 45 & over with two persons engaged in agriculture.4 On November 19, 1839, David and Asenath sold some land of Asenath's brother, Soloman Douglass, Jr., who had died intestate, to Soloman F. Jones for $80.5 He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Iredell County, North Carolina, with a household listed as one male 5-9, two males 10-14, one male 15-19, one male 40-49, one female 20-29, one female 30-39, and one female 40-49 with four persons engaged in agriculture.6 He and Asenath Douglass appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Iredell County, North Carolina, enumerated 15 November 1850. Their son James was listed as living with them, as was 33 year old Mary Henry.2 David Gilleland and Asenath Douglass appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Iredell County, North Carolina, enumerated 20 July 1860.7 David Gilleland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Fallstown township, Iredell County, North Carolina, enumerated 16 August 1870.8 Also living with him was 22 year old Mary Bass who was most likely his granddaughter, daughter of Mary Jane and Archibald Bass.8 On August 1, 1878, David sold 35 acres of land to his son Robert Kelton for $175.9 He died on 3 September 1879 at Iredell County, North Carolina.10

     Madge Patterson was born on 14 March 1876 at Scotland.1 She married Franklin Lee Gilliland, son of William Robert Gilliland and Mary Martha Simpson.1 Madge Patterson and Franklin Lee Gilliland appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Montgomery, Fayette County, West Virginia, enumerated 19 April 1910. Their daughter Ruby was listed as living with them.2 Madge Patterson and Franklin Lee Gilliland appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Montgomery, Fayette County, West Virginia, enumerated 21 January 1920. Their children Ruby and Franklin Lee were listed as living with them.3 Madge Patterson and Franklin Lee Gilliland appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Montgomery, Kanawha County, West Virginia, enumerated 2 April 1930. Their son Franklin Lee was listed as living with them.4 Madge Patterson and Franklin Lee Gilliland appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Montgomery, Kanawha County, West Virginia, enumerated 11 April 1940. Mrs. Madge Patterson Gilliland, 79, of 1017 Second Ave., died last night at home after a long illness. She was a native of Scotland and had lived in Montgomery for 57 years. She was a member of the Montgomery Presbyterian Church. Surviving: husband, Frank L; daughter, Mrs. Ruby Clement of Norfolk, Va; son, Franklin Gilliland of Montgomery Heights; and two grandchildren. The body is at the B.C. Hooper Funeral Home.

Madge was buried on 6 November 1965 at Montgomery Memorial Park, London, Kanawha County, West Virginia.6

Franklin L. Gilliland Jr., 93, of Montgomery passed on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Tazewell, Va. He was a lifelong resident of Montgomery and a lifelong member of Montgomery Presbyterian Church. He was also a fifty plus year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Montgomery, an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and was retired from American Electric Power Company's Kanawha River plant in Glasgow.

Frank was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Madge Patterson Gilliland of Montgomery; his wife of 65 years, Gayle, who passed on February 20, 2012; and his sister, Ruby Gilliland Clement.

He is survived by his daughter, Francie Gilliland Sagraves, and son-in-law, Cecil Sagraves, of North Tazewell, Va; grandson, Andrew Sagraves of Martins Ferry, Ohio; granddaughter, Heather Garnett; and great-granddaughter, Rylee Garnett of North Tazewell, Va. He is also survived by a niece, Linda Clement Barnes, and her husband, Jerry, of Virginia Beach, Va; and a sister-in-law, Sandra (Robert) Rogers of Wheelersburg, Ohio.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, 600 Old Fort Street, Cedar Grove, with the Rev. Jeff Floyd officiating. Burial will follow the service at Montgomery Memorial Park, London. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Monday. Cooke Funeral Home, Cedar Grove, is in charge of arrangements.2
