John Gilliland1

M, #3906, b. 1763, d. 23 June 1829
Last Edited=27 Feb 2013
John Gilliland was born in 1763.2 He married Mary ?1 From 1823 to 1825, John purchased a number of tracts of public land in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. The first was on November 6, 1823, where he purchased the E½ of the SW¼ of Section 21, Township 32N, Range 13E, consisting of 80 acres. On June 10, 1824, he purchased another 80 acres, the W½ of the SW¼ of Section 21, Township 32N, Range 13E. Then on July 15, 1825, he purchased yet another 80 acres, the W½ of the SE¼ of Section 13, Township 33N, Range 12E.3,4,5 On June 19, 1829, John made out his Last Will & Testament.1 John Gilliland died on 23 June 1829 at Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.1,2 He was buried at Apple Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Pocahontas, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.2

In the spring of 1835, John's son Elam was in Texas applying for a land grant. A "Character Certificate" was filed for him which stated he was from North Carolina. According to the 1830 census, Elam was born between 1801 and 1810. Going back to North Carolina for the 1800 and 1810 census records there were two John Gillilands, one in Mecklenburg County and one in Rockingham. The one in Rockingham County can be accounted for. In 1800, the one in Mecklenburg had a household consisting of one male 26-44, four females under 10, two females 10-14, and one female 26-44. In 1810, his household consisted of one male under 10, one male 45+, three females under 10, two females 16-25, and one female 45+. There is a possibility that this John Gilliland, who died in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, was originally from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

On May 18, 1835, a character certificate was submitted on him, probably the first step in acquiring a land survey. It stated that he was from North Carolina. On May 21, 1835, a land survey (No. 239) was conducted for Elam on the "Waters of the Trinity about 15 miles West of Robin's ferry 3 miles North of the S.
