John Burton Gilliland died on 19 January 1930 at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas, at age 57.7 He was buried at Pilot Point Community Cemetery, Pilot Point, Denton County, Texas.3 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

He and his brother Roy were killed in an explosion at the Blue Ribbon Laundry which they owned. The following article appeared in the Galveston Daily News on January 20th:

TWO LAUNDRY OWNERS DIE, ONE HURT WHEN BOILER EXPLODES IN DALLAS.

By Associated Press. Dallas, Tex., Jan. 19. -- Two men were dead and a third was in a critical condition here tonight as the result of a boiler explosion today in the Blue Ribbon laundry in the Oaklawn district of Dallas. The dead: J. B. Gilliland, killed instantly by flying steel from the boiler. Roy C. Gilliland, who died soon after the blast at a hospital of numerous injuries.

The man injured was Cobb Van Way, 45, who suffered two broken legs and other injuries when a portion of the boiler house wall fell on him. The explosion occurred next door to a fire substation and thirteen firemen, shaken by the blast, ran into the laundry to carry out the dead and injured. Windows in business establishments and houses for several blocks around were smashed by the concussion and flying debris. Pieces of sheet iron landed on housetops a block away. The Gilliland brothers were owners of the plant. The boiler house was in a galvanized iron shed in the rear and the men were inside at the time of the blast. The main building suffered only nominal damage. The explosion was laid to frozen pipes by Fire Chief Jesse Coffman.

John Burton Gilliland and Lillie Widner appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Highland Park, Dallas County, Texas, enumerated 12 April 1930. Their children Mary W., Mathias Wesley, Ralph, Pauline, Fred Taylor, John Burton and John Rufus Masters were listed as living with them.8 (The census taker obviously recorded the information for this census prior to January 19, 1930 and then dated it April 1930 when the census was supposed to have been taken. A good reason not to take census records too seriously.)

The following obituary appeared 26 December 2008 in the Dallas Morning News:

John Burton Gilliland passed away on December 8, 2008, at the age of 96. He was born May 5, 1912 in Pomona, California. The family moved back to Texas and developed Gilliland Oil Company which became a highly successful firm that collapsed during an oil price crash in the early 1920s. The family picked itself up and moved from place to place in search of the best opportunities. For a while, they operated a dairy farm just off of Inwood road between Maple and Denton Drive. After saving some money from the dairy farm, they then purchased and operated a grocery store on Preston Road and Normandy. Eventually, the family purchased a laundry in Dallas in the 1920s by the name of Blue Ribbon Laundry. In January of 1930, just a few months after the stock market crash of 1929, Burt's father was killed in a massive boiler explosion at the laundry. The family survived this terrible loss, kept the laundry going, and even expanded the laundry by purchasing White Star Laundry in the Knox area. They worked their way through the depression, keeping the laundry alive, and Burt eventually assumed control of White Star Laundry. Burt met Eloise Brooks at Baylor University and married her on April 7, 1936. They settled in Dallas, Texas and were happily married for 72 years, up to the date of her passing this September. He never recovered from her passing. He leaves behind a large family consisting of two surviving daughters and 9 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his kind and devoted daughter, Carol, who passed away far too soon on March 18, 1977. He was active in his church and served many volunteer causes. He worked diligently to expand the property holdings of Highland Park Presbyterian Church. He also served on many boards at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, and he served as Chairman of the Board of the hospital as well as cofounder and Chairman of the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation. Over the decades, he and his brother Wesley built a successful commercial real estate business that developed and operated commercial properties in Dallas. While in his eighties, he endured a contentious division of the real estate company. Despite this, he pulled himself back up and continued to come to the office on a daily basis well into his nineties. White Star laundry was torn down in the 1990s, and Burt built a new building on part of the land that the laundry formerly occupied. This building currently houses a long-term tenant, Ed Kellum and Sons, and the combined symbols of White Star Laundry and Blue Ribbon Laundry live on in the white stars set on a blue background at the top of the facade of the new building. Family graveside services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charity of your choice.2
