     William Shepherd Gilliland was born on 29 April 1811 at Virginia.2,3 He married Emeline S. Cunningham on 4 July 1833 at Kanawha County, Virginia (now West Virginia).4 In 1847, William purchased 300 acres of land in South Hills from Andrew Donnally. He built a log cabin (which is now on the National Register of Historic Places) and the family resided there until 1868, when he sold the cabin and land to the Neale family and moved across the river to Charleston.5

William Shepherd Gilliland and Emeline S. Cunningham appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Kanawha County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated 27 August 1850. Their children Margaret Elizabeth, Samuel W., Fanny S., William A., Loelia Emeline, Mary W. and John S. were listed as living with them.2 William Shepherd Gilliland and Emeline S. Cunningham appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Kanawha County, Virginia, enumerated 21 July 1860. Their children Samuel W., Fanny S., William A., Loelia Emeline, Mary W., John S. and Mariah were listed as living with them.6 William Shepherd Gilliland and Emeline S. Cunningham appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Charleston township, Kanawha County, West Virginia, enumerated 10 August 1870. Their children Mariah and John S. were listed as living with them.7 William Shepherd Gilliland and Emeline S. Cunningham appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Loudon District, Kanawha County, West Virginia, enumerated 14 June 1880.8

On April 21, 1899, William made out his last will & testament.9 William Shepherd Gilliland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia, at 215 Brook Street, enumerated 11 June 1900.10 Also living with him was his widowed daugher, Margaret Allen, and her 34 year old son Charles Allen. He died on 5 May 1903 at Kanawha County, West Virginia, at age 92.3 He was buried at Gilliland Family Cemetery, Kanawha County, West Virginia.3

     Fanny S. Gilliland was born circa 1841 at Kanawha County, Virginia (now West Virginia).1 She was the daughter of William Shepherd Gilliland and Emeline S. Cunningham.1 Fanny S. Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Kanawha County, Virginia, in the household of her parents, William Shepherd Gilliland and Emeline S. Cunningham.3 Fanny S. Gilliland married John Y. Gilliland, son of George Gilliland and Agnes ?, on 16 January 1868 at Kanawha County, West Virginia.1 Fanny S. Gilliland and John Y.      John Y. Gilliland was born circa 1835 at Alleghany County, Virginia.1 He was the son of George Gilliland and Agnes ?1 John Y. Gilliland married Fanny S. Gilliland, daughter of William Shepherd Gilliland and Emeline S. Cunningham, on 16 January 1868 at Kanawha County, West Virginia.1 John Y. Gilliland and Fanny S. Gilliland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Charleston township, Kanawha County, West Virginia, enumerated 10 August 1870. Their daughter Agnes Emeline was listed as living with them.3 John Y. Gilliland and Fanny S. Gilliland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia, enumerated 11 June 1880. Their daughter Agnes Emeline was listed as living with them.4 John Y. Gilliland and Fanny S. Gilliland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia, at 239 Brook Street, enumerated 11 June 1900. Their daughter Agnes Emeline was listed as living with them.5
     In the Kanawha marriage register, John was listed a being born in Alleghany County, Virginia and his parents as George and Agnes. The the 1850 census for Alleghany County there was a John Gilliland, age 16, living with the Sampson Karnes family. That family was living next to Agnes Gilliland and her three boys. This is probably John.6

Cunningham, on 18 September 1872 at Kanawha County, West Virginia.2,1 Mary Cynthia Kennedy and John S. Gilliland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Alden, Kanawha County, West Virginia, enumerated 14 June 1900. Their daughter Katherine was listed as living with them.3 Mary Cynthia Kennedy died on 30 December 1903 at Kanawha, Kanawha County, West Virginia, at age 56.1 She was buried at Gilliland Family Cemetery, Kanawha County, West Virginia.4

Cunningham, on 1 November 1860 at Kanawha County, Virginia (now West Virginia).1 Mary A. Mays appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Charleston township, Kanawha County, West Virginia, enumerated 16 August 1870. Her son Samuel W. was listed as living with her.2 Also living with them were Ella Mays, age 12, and Laura Mays, age 10. Mary A.
