Alexander B Gilliland1

Last Edited=26 Mar 2018
Alexander B Gilliland was born on 4 February 1815 at Brown County, Ohio.1 He was the son of John Gilliland and Mary Miller.1

The following account of Alexander Gilliland's life was taken from notes written by his son, Lyle Willis Gilliland.

Alexander lived with his parents on their farm until the death of his father, John Gilliland, on December 19, 1843. Alexander was afflicted with rheumatism most of his youth and early manhood, so much so that he was confined to his bed a great part of each year from the time he was 15 until 28 years of age. When a young man, he followed "teaming" a great deal, not being able to follow any employment that required much walking or use of his feet as his toes were drawn up by rheumatism. He was tall and slender, standing 5 ft. 11 in. in height and weighing 140 to 145 lbs. He had blue eyes, black hair and a fair complexion.

He moved to Putnam County, Illinois early in 1846 and purchased a farm. Alexander B Gilliland married Mary Truehart Willis, daughter of Stephen D. Willis and Nancy Ann ?, on 19 May 1846.1 Alexander B Gilliland and Mary Truehart Willis appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Douglas County, Oregon, at Deer Creek, enumerated 2 June 1880. Their children Harriet Caroline, Inez and Lily were listed as living with them.2 He and Mary had three children while living in Putnam County. On March 17, 1853, they left and moved to Oregon, reaching Fosters (the first house in Willamette Valley, Oregon) on October 2, 1853. He purchased a farm on Deer Creek some 10 miles east of Roseburg in Douglas County, Oregon where the family settled on November 15, 1853 and there resided until September 27, 1879 when he rented out his farm and moved into an unknown place .

On Monday morning, April 15, 1883, he was taken with chills which developed into pneumonia and grew worse until seven minutes before 1:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, the 24th, when he died. The following is an extract from a letter by his daughter, Inez, written to his son Lyle on Monday the 23rd:

"Dear Brother: Father is worse today and is very sick indeed. The doctor says he will be better soon but we haven't much faith in what he says as he has not helped father any yet and he grows weaker rapidly. He is delirious today, but knows everyone. He tries to talk but we can understand but little he says."

Alexander B Gilliland died on 24 April 1883 at Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon, at age 68.3 He was buried on 25 April 1883 at Roseburg Memorial Gardens, Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon.3,4

The following obituary appeared 28 April 1883 in the Roseburg Plain Dealer, Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon:

Died — At his residence in this city, on Tuesday morning, April 24, 1883, Alexander B. Gilliland, aged 68 years, 2 months and 20 days. Deceased was born in Brown County, Ohio, in 1815, where he lived until the year 1846, when he moved to Ill. From thence he crossed the plains to Oregon in 1853, and settled on his farm on Deer Creek, where he lived with his family until about four years ago when they moved to Roseburg. He was married to Miss Mary Willis in 1846, which union remained harmonious until severed by the cruel hand of death. Eight children were born to them, of whom five only remain to mingle their tears with the stricken wife and mother. Deceased was a devout and faithful Christian until the time of his death. By the demise of this man, this community has lost a valuable member and the family an affectionate and kind husband and father. Deepest sympathy of the entire community is with the bereaved family.3

The rest of this narrative was also taken from the notes of Lyle Willis Gilliland:

"My father was an industrious hard working man, a farmer and a mechanic. He lacked the education necessary for a first class business man and his tastes led him to think of other things; he had no desire for a great deal of wealth and therefor never accumulated a great deal. When he died, he was possessed of his farm on Deer Creek in Douglas County, Oregon consisting of something over 700 acres of land, nearly all under fence, with a good orchard, house and barn. The orchard was planted and the improvements made with his own hands. He also owned a residence and 2 lots of land in the city of Roseburg. All this property was not worth more than $7000 to $8000. He was free from debt. In politics he was what is termed a republican party. He belonged to what was known as the anti-slavery party, never was an office seeker and never held a political office. He always took a lively interest in politics and public men and was free to express his opinions at any time without a thought as to whether they would please or displease.

"He was never a member of any secret society. On the contrary, he was bitterly opposed to them all. He was strictly temperate in all his habits, was a professor of christianity since early manhood and practiced what he professed. His advice and his example were always good. I never knew him to eat a meal at home without first returning thanks to God. He was a kind indulgent father and lived happily with my mother until his death."

In the fall of 1865 he attended school at the Roseburg Academy.1 In December of 1866 Lyle went to Portland, Oregon and entered school at the National Business College. On February 20, 1867 he was elected librarian of the Portland Association. The following narrative was taken from the book Lyle wrote on his family history:

"12th September 1876 I left Portland for Roseburg, Douglas Co. with my family (wife and two children, Chas. and May) on a visit to father and mother. 19th September 1876 I was with Robert when he accidentally shop himself. 20th Sept., 1876 I telegraphed to Cyrus who was in Portland "Robert is dead, accidentally shot himself. October 1878 my son Charlie and I went out to Deer Creek on a visit to father and mother. 19th October, mother came home with us and 31st went up the Columbia River to her brother Parrish's and remained all winter.

Saturday 6th November 1880 arrived at Blackfoot and started home with the corpse the same day. Monday morning (a few minutes after 12 o'clock midnight) 15th Nov. I arrived at Portland with the corpse. Monday 22nd Nov. 1880 I went home with father and mother to Roseburg. Thanksgiving day - 26 Nov. 1880, I went out hunting and killed two deer at the old farm on Deer Creek. Saturday, 27 Nov., I went home with my Uncle Owen Willis from Roseburg. Wednesday, 8 December, 1880, I attended the burial of my cousin Merle Phipps who died at St. Mary's Academy, Portland, 5th Dec., 1880 and was buried on grandfather's old farm on South Umpqua beside her mother's grave.

"Friday 21st October 1881 I went out to Roseburg on a visit to father and mother and took Charlie and May with me. My uncle Owen L. Willis was here and went out with me. After seeing my father and mother I went home with Owen and had a big hunt. I returned from Roseburg Nov. 4, 1881. Tuesday, 24 April 1883 I went to Roseburg to attend my father's funeral.
