     David Gilleland was born circa 1805 at Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Barnett Gilleland and Nancy Glover.2 David Gilleland married Ann D. ?1 David Gilleland and Ann D. ? appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Connoquenessing township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 10 August 1850. Their daughter Nancy G. was listed as living with them.1 David Gilleland and Ann D. ? appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of West Deer township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 8 June 1860. Their daughter Nancy G. was listed as living with them.3 David Gilleland died before 12 January 1867 at Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.4

David died intestate and his personal estate was insufficient to pay his debts so Ann, acting as the administratrix of his estate, petitioned the court to sell his property in Hampton township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, consisting of three pieces of land (12+ acres, 20+ acres, and 145 perches). The court so ordered and the land was sold at public auction at the court house in Pittsburgh on February 23, 1867.5 Then on July 8, 1871, Ann filed her final account and was then discharged as administratrix.6

Gilleland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Findley township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 30-39, one female under 5, two females 5-9, and one female 20-29.3 He and Sarah Harsha appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Findley township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 5 September 1850. Their children Mary I., Rachel, Elizabeth Ann, Harshey, Ellinor and William J. were listed as living with them.1 David A. Gilleland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 11 June 1860. His children Elizabeth Ann, Ellinor and William J. were listed as living with him.4 David A. David's son-in-law, Zachariah Sweringen, was made administrator of his estate.5 On March 26, 1866, he filed his final account as the administrator and reported that the estate showed a balance due the accountant of $7.35.6

This was probably the James C. Gilleland who started the weekly newspaper Mercury in 1811.4
