William Gilliland was born circa 1762 at Ireland.1,2,3 He married Margaret ?4 On May 20, 1829, William, Margaret, and their children Mary, Samuel, William, and Matthew, arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Francis Peabody, having departed Belfast & Liverpool.4 According to a biographical sketch done on his grandson, Andrew D. Gilliland, William came from Londonderry, Ireland.5 William Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Little Beaver township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, with a household listed as one male 60-69, one female 20-29, and one female 60-69.1 He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Darlington township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, with a household listed as one male 70-79 and one female 70-79.6 He died on 30 September 1847 at Beaver County, Pennsylvania.3 He was buried at Seceder Cemetery, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.3

There was a David Gilliland, born circa 1768, died February 24, 1815, buried in Seceder Cemetery, who may be a brother to William. Nothing further is known about him at this point.7

There were two Gilliland families in Beaver County, Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. William was the head of one family and the other family had ties to Archibald Gilliland and his wife Elinor. Through DNA testing we know that these families are probably not closely related.
