Christopher Gilliland was born on 20 December 1831 at Kentucky.1,2 He was the son of Abel Gilliland and Jane G. Gastineau.1 On October 7, 1863, Christopher joined the U.S. Navy, Mississippi Squadron, and served as an acting carpenter aboard the Osage until his discharge on January 22, 1865 at Mound City, Illinois.3 Christopher Gilliland married Jenny Brundig on 18 February 1869 at Methodist Episcopal Church South, Gallatin, Daviess County, Missouri.4,3 Christopher Gilliland and Jenny Brundig appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Daviess County, Missouri, enumerated 7 July 1870.5 Christopher Gilliland and Jenny Brundig appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Buena Vista, Chaffee County, Colorado, enumerated 5 June 1880, boarding at the J. J. Hughlitt residence.6 In 1907, Christopher was living in a home for disabled soldiers in Montgomery County, Ohio.3 Christopher Gilliland died on 5 October 1909 at Kingston, Ross County, Ohio, at age 77.2

The complete 128 page Civil War pension file for Christopher is available online at www.fold3.com.

Though his death certificate states that his parents names were John Gilliland and Mary Jones, I'm pretty sure that he was the son of Abel Gilliland and Jane Gastineau. My guess is that his widow supplied the information about the parents and she was unaware of their names. In the biographical sketch of James Harvey Gilliland, in the book Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Ind. published in 1908, it was stated that Christopher was living in Missouri. The only Christopher Gilliland in the 1900 Federal Census was living in Shoal township, Clinton County, Missouri. That is also the information that is recorded in his widow's pension application.

Bloomfield News, July 11, 1912:

Rachel GILLILAND, whose maiden name was LAMB, was born near Springville, Ind., May 29, 1836, aged seventy-six years and twenty-six days.

She was married in March of 1854, to James H. Gilliland. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters. The children all lived to be grown and married, but two of them, the oldest son Si, and the oldest daughter, Jennie, preceded their mother to the spirit world. Three sons and three daughters survive her, all living in southern Indiana, near her old home, except one son Zeno, who lives in the state of Washington.

Not long after her marriage she obeyed the gospel of Christ, and thus became a member of the Church of Christ. She and her husband stood side by side in the church, and all their children followed them to the Savior. Her husband was and elder of the church and three of her sons have served in the same capacity.

When she was a young mother with three little children the war came on. Her husband enlisted in the army and served three years. These were practically years of the saddest and hardest widowhood, during which time she wrought for herself and children while her husband fought for his country. In December, 1875, her husband died and left her with eight children. She lived a widow thirty-six years, nearly half of her whole life. By hard work and good management she kept a home for her children until they could make homes for themselves. She moved from Jackson Township, Greene county to Bloomfield in 1886, securing for her children better opportunities for business and education. One thing in her favor was that she had good health almost all her life till about three years ago. Since that time she declined till it became necessary for her to give up her home and live with her children. She left Bloomfield several months ago and for a while lived with her son, John C. GILLILAND. Later she went to the country home in Lawrence county of her daughter Mrs. Florence Holmes. Here she fell asleep on Tuesday, June 25, 1912, and on the following day was laid to rest in the "Old Bethel Cemetery" in Jackson township. She had finished the work the Lord gave her to do, the rearing of a useful christian family.—T.A. COX.3

John Calvin Gilliland was born on 27 June 1857 at Jackson township, Greene County, Indiana.1,2 He was the son of James Harvey Gilliland and Rachel Lamb.1 John Calvin Gilliland married Ella Hulse on 26 November 1889.2 A biographical sketch on John Calvin appeared in the book Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Ind. with Reminiscences of Pioneer Days published in 1908.2 John Calvin Gilliland died on 13 July 1916 at Greene County, Indiana, at age 59.3,1,4 He was buried at Grandview Cemetery, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana.4

The following obituary appeared in a local paper:

John C. GILLILAND who for more than thirty years past had been a familiar figure in our community passed away at his home in Bloomfield on Monday July 31st (1916). He was born in Jackson township of this county 59 years ago (b. 6/27/1857). In early childhood he was afflicted with disease that affected his spine so that he could not walk uprightly but he attended school and prepared himself for bookkeeping and general business. For several years he was bookkeeper for DUGGER & NEAL at their elevator her and at other points in the county. Twenty-seven years ago he was married to Ella HULSE who survives him. Shortly after his marriage he was again afflicted by the loss of the use of his lower limbs and had to resort to the use of a wheel chair to move from place to place. In spite of all the handicaps he never lost courage but fought the battle of life successfully. At the time of his death he was the secretary of the F. & M. H. B. L. & S. Association and was also a stockholder in this association and also in the Bloomfield Trust Co., and the Bloomfield Concrete Silo Co. He was for several years secretary of the Home Light and Water Co., but on account of failing health recently resigned this position. To young men who complain that they have no opportunity to advance in business, his life should put them to shame as he became a man amongst men regardless of the seemingly insurmountable difficulties he had to encounter. He not only informed himself on business affairs but he spent his leisure in a wide range of reading and was one of the best informed men in Bloomfield. He also was active in all reform movements and for every thing that would make society better. He had for many years been an Elder in the Bloomfield Christian Church and will be greatly missed by the congregation.Funeral Services were held at the Christian church on Tuesday afternoon Elder Merritt OWEN preached the sermon, T. A. COX added his personal tribute and J. A. SPENCER offered prayer. Interment in Grandview cemetery.4
