     William Gilliland was born on 16 August 1813 at Chatham County, North Carolina.1 He married Martha (Patsy) Craven.2 William Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Chatham County, North Carolina, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 20-29, one female 5-9, and one female 20-29.3 He and Martha (Patsy) Craven appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Chatham County, North Carolina, enumerated 27 November 1850. Their children Henry, Sarah Jane (Sallie), Mary (Polly), James and William were listed as living with them.4

On October 18, 1856, William, of Chatham County, purchased 135 acres of land on Brush Creek in Randolph County, North Carolina from Evan Owen for $350.5 Then on July 26, 1859, William, now living in Randolph County, sold those 135 acres for $235.17.6
