Gilliland and William James Hughes, and their children, appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Jackson County, Alabama, enumerated 8 November 1850.3 Sallie P. Gilliland and William James Hughes (and their children) appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Division No. 1, Jackson County, Alabama, enumerated 4 June 1860.2 They were listed on the same page as Robert S. Gilliland. Sallie P. Gilliland died on 17 January 1873 at Jackson County, Alabama, at age 50.4 She was buried at Rocky Springs Cemetery, Rocky Springs, Jackson County, Alabama.4 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

According to a plaque erected at the burial site of Sallie's husband William James Hughes, William was the nephew of W. J. Price who was mostly likely Sallie's guardian after her parents died. Since Sallie was only an infant when her parents died it's likely that she was raised by the Price family.5
